The Dutch international admitted that making it onto the pitch for the major Champions League fixture felt nothing short of a miracle after enduring a severely disrupted campaign. Speaking about his physical struggles, the player recalled suffering an adductor injury during a Premier League fixture against Everton back in March, which sidelined him for an extended period.
A long and painful recovery process
The road to recovery was far from straightforward for the talented defender. Overall, the player spent roughly 25 weeks on the treatment table across different phases, severely hampering his rhythm. According to his own admissions, he only truly felt physically comfortable during the exact week leading up to the European final held in Budapest, where he eventually made a substitute appearance. Despite managing to feature in the match, the defender candidly revealed that he was still far from operating at his absolute best level, noting that while things appeared fine from an external perspective, he personally felt he could not give his maximum effort on the field.
The heartbreak of missing the World Cup
This prolonged spell on the sidelines also carried significant emotional and professional consequences, forcing him to make heartbreaking sacrifices on the international stage. The physical setbacks meant he had to renounce representing the Netherlands national team, a bitter pill to swallow for the 25-year-old athlete. Leaving his international teammates behind proved to be a severe psychological blow, especially after he had dedicated two intense months of rehabilitation specifically aimed at being ready for the continental showpiece. Following this intense period and subsequent disappointment, the young star acknowledged needing a mental break to recharge.
Looking ahead to upcoming fixtures
Having navigated through months of uncertainty and arduous physical therapy, the defender has successfully returned to action with Arsenal. He initially featured as a substitute against Sunderland before earning a spot in the starting lineup against Brighton, marking his first start in six months. Although he has also rejoined the Dutch national selection, his physical management remains extremely cautious, evidenced by his absence from full team training recently as medical staff carefully monitor his workload moving forward.
