From three teams to a continental festival: AFCON's story

The first Africa Cup of Nations was played in Sudan in 1957.

The first Africa Cup of Nations was held in Sudan in 1957 with just three teams: Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan. Egypt won it, and remain the most successful nation in the tournament's history.

Today the finals bring together two dozen national teams, and Morocco hosted the edition that ran from December 2025 into January 2026.
